This study explored the experiences of the maritime cadets before and during
their onboard training. This study utilized an in-depth research design to gather
the needed data. This is a method for qualitative research that emphasizes the
similarities among people who belong to a group. To describe the specific
experience is the primary objective of this approach. The journey towards
international cadetship at Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT) is a rigorous
and demanding process characterized by many challenges and opportunities.
Before students embark on their cadetship journey, they face significant
pressures from competition, financial constraints, and the weight of
expectations. Despite these challenges, students persevere due to their aspirations
and the support systems provided by their institutions and peers. Anxiety adds
another layer of complexity as students navigate the uncertainties of selection
exams, grappling with fear of failure and self-doubt. During their cadetship,
students encounter a mix of growth opportunities and significant challenges.
Homesickness, exhaustion, discipline, and resilience shaped their experiences at
sea. Homesickness, fueled by loneliness and longing for home, is countered by
fosteringconnections and relationships onboard. Exhaustion, a byproduct of the
demanding nature of sea life, is managed through self- care and social support
networks. Discipline is essential for safety and professionalism, upheld through
adherence to rules and safety protocols. Resilience enables students to adapt,
endure, and persist in the pursuit of their goals, preparing them for successful
careers in the maritime industry. Securing international cadetship positions
presents its own set of challenges for PIT students, including rejection and
financial difficulties. Rejection during selection exams can be emotionally
challenging, impacting students' sense of identity and self-worth. However, by
acknowledging their feelings and reframing rejection as a learning opportunity,
students can cultivate resilience and continue pursuing their aspirations.
Financial constraints further compound the challenges, yet students navigate
these obstacles with determination, seeking financial aid and exploring
alternative career pathways. Despite the hurdles, the journey towards
international cadetship demands courage, resilience, and adaptability as
students strive to realize their dreams in the maritime industry.
