Level of Knowledge on Accounting System among Barangay Micro Business Enterprises (BMBE) in Batangas City

The focus of this study was to identify the level of knowledge on accounting system among Barangay Micro Business Enterprises (BMBE) in Batangas City. There were four objectives of the study; first was to determine the percentage of the respondent’s personal profile in terms of sex, age and educational attainment and their business’ profile in terms of nature of the business, number of years in operation and the number of employees; second was to determine the respondent’s level of knowledge in accounting system in terms of identifying, measuring and communicating; third was to determine the significant differences on the level of knowledge of the respondents when grouped according to their profile; and fourth was to propose an extension activity that may enhance or improve the business owners’ knowledge on accounting system. The respondents of the study were the 368 micro businesses in Batangas City. For the understanding of the objectives, the researchers used random sampling and descriptive method in conducting the study to arrive with the most precise conclusion. The self-structured survey questionnaire was used as the primary tool in collecting the data. In analyzing the data gathered, various statistical tools were used such as percentage and chi-square method. Furthermore, the findings revealed that majority of the respondents are female with the frequency of 242 or 66 percent. In terms of age, majority are 40-44 with the frequency of 73 or 20 percent, also in terms of educational attainment majority are college graduate with the frequency of 144 or 39 percent. In terms of the respondent’s business profile, the highest for the type of business is trading business with the frequency of 203 or 55 percent. When it comes to the number of years of operation, most businesses are 1-5 years with a frequency of 163 or 44 percent and in terms of number of employees most of them have 1-3 employees with the frequency of 336 or 91 percent. In accounting system with regard to identifying, measuring and communicating, business owners have average level of knowledge. Results also revealed that there is a significant difference on the respondent’s level of knowledge on accounting system in terms of identifying when grouped according to the type of business. However, there is no significant difference on the respondents’ level of knowledge on accounting system in terms of measuring and communicating when grouped according to the respondent’s profile in terms of sex, age, educational attainment, type of business, number of years of operation and the number of employees. Based on the foregoing findings and conclusions, the researchers proposed an extension activity to enhance or improve the BMBE’s knowledge on accounting system in terms of identifying, measuring and communicating.
