The main purpose of this project was to design and install a solar-powered traffic signal system to provide a traffic light signal for the motorists in Brgy. Balanga, Ibaan, Batangas. The study covered the review of standards required for the construction of a solar-powered system and the installation of the traffic signal. The prototype was designed to maximize the use of solar energy in Brgy. Balanga, Ibaan, Batangas. This project aimed to attain the following objectives: to develop and install a solar powered traffic signal system, to use renewable resources as its source of energy, and to test and evaluate the prototype based on the following parameters: power generation and functionality. This project study used engineering type of research methodology which included designing, planning, procedures and strategies to create an operating prototype. The project clarified how to harness the sun's rays as a source of energy and convert these into electrical energy. The prototype was composed of two 50-W solar panels, two 18-Ah deep cycle batteries, ultrasonic sensor, microcontroller, charge controller, and four 4-W LED traffic signals. The materials were acquired based on their availability in the market and in accordance with the financial capability of the researchers. The project could have positive effects on the people upon its installation. It would not only lessen the dependence on fossil fuel and combustion for energy, but it could also ensure the safety of the people. Furthermore, it could affect positively the economy for it would lessen the dependence and importation of fuels produced in other countries, thus the Philippines can use the dollars saved for other important imports. The developed solar-powered traffic signal installed in Brgy. Balanga, Ibaan, Batangas proved effective and functional, as shown by the different tests. However, further studies and improvement should be done by future researchers to improve the project in all aspects.
