Dandruff is a common scalp disorder affecting almost half of the post pubertal population of any ethnicity and both genders. It is apparently caused by a fungus called Malassezia furfur. Dandruff cannot be completely eliminated but can only be managed and effectively controlled. Nowadays, market is strongly dominated by the synthetic origin of shampoo which are employed in hair care preparations for the treatment of dandruff. These shampoo’s main synthetic ingredients are reviewed to have harmful effects especially during regular usage. This causes severe dryness, hair fall and destroying budding hair shafts whereas, natural ingredients or their formulations are practical alternative to these synthetic agents. Hence an attempt was made to formulate an antidandruff shampoo which is effective in terms of safety and treating the dandruff condition better than the chemical based antidandruff shampoo. The antidandruff shampoos were formulated using Maracuja Oil (MO) as the active ingredient together with some suitable natural ingredients. The formulated shampoos upon varying the % MO content (13% and 16%) were subjected to evaluation parameters like sensory evaluation in terms of color, aroma and texture, pH, viscosity, percentage of solids contents, dirt dispersion, foaming ability and foam stability, wetting time and antimicrobial assay activity against Malassezia furfur strain. Also, the properties of the formulated shampoos were compared to the commercially available shampoo. The properties of 13% MO and 16% MO formulation were comparable to each other, thus both can be taken as the best sample and can be compared to the commercially available shampoo. Upon comparison, the formulated shampoos exhibited better antimicrobial properties against the commercially available shampoo because it has the larger zone of inhibition, however for the physicochemical and sensory properties, further research and development is required to improve its overall quality.
