Balintawak River is located in Barangay Balintawak, Lipa City, Batangas. It is approximately 3670 meters long. Balintawak River is one of the water bodies which lacks attention in terms of preserving its natural quality. This study was carried out to determine the water quality of the river based on its physicochemical and biological parameters. The sampling was conducted last October 1, 2015. Water samples were collected from three (3) stations along the river. The resulting BOD values of the river in mg/L are 24, 9, and 21 for the three stations respectively, whereas, the DENR standard value is ≤7 (10) mg/L. The resulting DO values are 4.5 mg/L for Station 1, 6.6 mg/L for Station 2 and 4.2 mg/L for Station 3. The DENR standard is ≥5mg/ L. The resulting pH values of the river are 7.21, 7.12, and 6.95 for the three stations respectively, whereas, the standard is between the ranges of 6.5-8.5. The resulting Total Coliform Count values are 30000 for Station 1, and 50000 MPN/ 100 mL both for Stations 2 and 3. The DENR standard is ≤5000 MPN/ 100 mL. The results showed that the river’s condition is satisfactory in terms of BOD5, DO, and pH but has poor quality in terms of Total Coliform Count according to DENR Administrative Order 34 Series of 1990. The factors affecting the degradation of the water quality of the river determined after the conducted ocular visits are: the discharge of waste from agricultural activities such as raising of pigs, horses and ducks; the discharge from the residential areas, food stalls and from the public market. The study concludes that with the current status of the river, its water cannot be used for recreational activities.
