The study assessed the conflict management among identified state universities in Region
VIII during school year 2012 – 2013. A total of 130 administrators and 254 teachers from
randomly sampled state Universities in Region VIII served as respondents. Most of the
administrator-respondents were female, married, with a doctorate degree, have a salary range
of P20,000–29,000, designated as director/manager, with 1–3 dependents and had been in
the service for quite a long time; while the teacher-respondents were female, married, with
master’s degree, receiving a low salary, with an academic rank of instructor, having 1–3
dependents and have been in the teaching service for quite a long time. There was a high level
of skills of school administrators in managing conflicts between administrators and teacher,
teacher and teacher, teacher and student as well as student and student as revealed by the
teacher – respondents. The teachers perceived that the conflicts were oftentimes caused by
favoritism, and laxity among teachers; the conflict resolution strategies were utilized to a great
extent; the grievance committee was involved to a great extent in conflict resolution, and the
degree of teamwork/cohesiveness among teachers and administrators was high. There was
a significant positive relationship between the management skills and the causes of conflict,
conflict resolution strategies used, extent of involvement of the Grievance Committee in Conflict
Resolution and degree of teamwork/cohesiveness among teachers and administrators.
