Tanim Island is located in Laguna de Bay which is divided into 2 municipalities, Cardona and Binangonan consisting of 24 barangays. It is strategically located within the lake bounded with water and the municipalities of Laguna and Rizal creating a diverse cultures in the community with the island. The distance and lack of readily accessible transportation propelled to the practice of using alternative medicine in the community.
The study used descriptive method-survey research design wherein an instrument was used to gather information from the residents of the Island on the medicinal plants present in Talim Island in terms of: local name, family, distribution, local availability, ailments, plant part used, methods of preparation of use, methods of storage and processing and mode of administration. The frequency of utilization of plants present in Talim Island in terms of ailments and plant family were also determined.
Based on the survey. Based on the survey conducted there are 100 plants that are currently used in the island as medicinal purposes for 61 ailments. The common ailments in the island include Fever, Cough, Wounds, High Blood Pressure, Stomachache, Diarrhea, Kidney problem, Urinary Tract infection, Skin Disease, Colds, Diabetes, Body pain, Dengue, Flatulence and Toothache.
While the most common plants used to treat ailments are the following: Sambong, Oregano, Lagundi, Guyabano, Tawa-tawa, Buko/Niyog, Bayabas, Pansit- pansitan, Sampalok-Sampalokan, Banaba, Luyang-Dilaw, Damong Maria, Atis, Mangga and Salay/Tanglad.
