Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is a vital crop in Eastern Visayas, supporting local livelihoods and making a significant contribution to the region's economy. As demand for coconut products grows, improving productivity through hybrid varieties is essential. These hybrids offer better yield, quality, and resilience to pests, diseases, and climate change. However, verifying the genetic purity of hybrid seeds remains a challenge, as traditional methods are both slow and prone to error. This project aims to develop a Marker-Based Device for Coconut Hybridity Testing (MDCHT), a molecular tool that provides fast, accurate, and cost-effective verification of hybrid seeds. The end goal of this project is to enhance the reliability of coconut breeding programs and support smallholder farmers by ensuring access to high-quality planting materials. This will eventually lead to a more sustainable and competitive coconut industry in the region.
