Student motivation and study habits are vital determinants of academic success, especially in flexible learning environments where independent learning is crucial. This study explored the motivation and study habits of Teacher Education students at Visayas State University on the implementation of flexible learning modalities. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, the study involved 897 respondents from the five (5) VSU campuses through quantitative surveys and qualitative focus group discussions. Results revealed that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation levels among students were generally low, regardless of sex, socio-economic status, or year level.
Similarly, students exhibited weak study habits in areas such as time management, class attendance, and exam preparation, with only slight improvements observed among upper-year students. Factors such as digital discomfort, lack of timely feedback from instructors, and academic overload were identified as significant barriers to
student engagement. Despite these challenges, students demonstrated resilience by adopting independent learning strategies and relying on peer support. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant correlation between motivation and study habits, emphasizing their interdependence in academic success. The findings highlight the need for more responsive and structured support systems within flexible learning environments. The study recommends enhancing institutional support, improving teacher feedback and engagement, among others.
