Development of Molecular Diagnostics for Important Viruses Infecting Sweetpotato in Support with its Commercialization and Distribution of Quality Planting Materials (Phase 1)

The project aims towards the production of disease-free planting materials of different sweet potato
varieties for commercialization and distribution responds to UN’s sustainable development goal to end hunger,
achieve food security and promoting sustainable agriculture. Viral infection of planting materials for commercial
usage, substantially decreases production in the field, either infected with one or several viruses. Thus, development
of sensitive and reliable virus diagnostic protocols through molecular methods is indeed necessary to address crop
productivity and sustainability because crop productivity depends primarily on quality planting material used.
Combined with plant tissue culture techniques, it provides rapid reliable system for the production of large number of
genetically uniform virus-free plantlets. The knowledge generated from this project has great implication not only in
ensuring food security for the future generations, but also by providing them with avenue to create business
opportunities and partnership either public or private sector and make it sustainable to help alleviate their kind of
living.
