This project aims to evaluate the quality of the water in the major river systems in Leyte through
physicochemical characterization. To accomplish the aim of this project, five component studies that focus
on the analyses of physicochemical properties, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, heavy metal (copper,
lead and cadmium) contents of the river water, organic matter, and carbonates of the sediments and
pigmental composition of the freshwater algae were implemented by each respective component study
leader (without honorarium) starting July 2020 when the world experienced the covid-19 pandemic.
Having no budget for personnel services, senior BS Chemistry students of DoPAC were tapped as part of
the major river system research team (MRS-RT). Since the implementation of the project, six major river
systems in Leyte were evaluated such as the Banahao-Biasong River and Pagbanganan River systems in
Baybay City, Salog River system in Hilongos, Anilao River system in Ormoc City, Sibugay River system in
Albuera, and Marabong-Daguitan River system in the Province of Leyte. For the academic year 2023-
2024, the Palhi River system at the City of Baybay in the province of Leyte was chosen as the final river
prior to the realignment of the project for AY 2024 and 2025.
