This project focused on the identification of biological activity and chemistry of essential oils, which have
significant importance in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and medical industry. The overall aim of the study is to identify
key chemical structures of plant volatile compounds producing antimicrobial effect in vapor phase through the
exploration of biodiversity of Southeast Asian essential oil-bearing plants using advanced analytical methods and
innovative bioassays. The results of this project contributed to the identification of plants that have pharmaceutical and
medicinal properties to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. This project also responded to
the objectives of the VSU Internationalization Programs, especially in the aspects of increasing collaborations with
foreign HEIs on research; providing access to our students and staff for training and studies abroad; increasing the
number of students enrolled and visited the university; increasing the number of foreign researchers and visiting
scientists in the university; and establishing joint degree programs with foreign universities. This project was in
collaboration with the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague.
The collaboration formed between the institutions fitted well to the short and long-term goals of VSU in terms
of its internationalization program through networking with established professors. Through the project, it also
facilitated in bound MS/Ph.D. students from Europe, Southeast Asia and the Pacific who worked on the project through
joint granting of credits, thereby increasing the numbers of foreign students in VSU and send VSU students and staff
for graduate studies abroad thereby improving the capabilities of Filipinos to conduct STEM researches.
