The study explores the challenges and technology needs among the fisherfolks and danggit processors in
Barangay Plaridel, Palompon Leyte. Based on the results of the interviews among 50 participants, it was
found out that weather-dependence was a major concern, especially during rainy days that interrupt
traditional sun drying methods. Danggit waste concern (96%) and the disposal of this waste (86). Low
selling price in the market (80%), and processing technology (72%) for danggit deboning is also a challenge
because of the risk of getting a cut during splitting of danggit. It was also found out that 100% of fisherfolk
still use traditional method in cutting/splitting fish. And also, 100% of processors rely on sun-drying, with
fish laid out on improvised trays made of bamboo and polyethylene plastic screen. To improve the
production of the industry it is suggested to introduce the weather-reliant drying technology, packaging
technology, deboning, danggit waste processor and other relevant training to improve the production of
dried boneless danggit in the industry.
