This research investigates the driving forces behind the career choices of Filipino seafarers and the realities
they face in the global maritime industry. It explores how economic benefits, institutional support, and
personal aspirations influence decisions, while also analyzing challenges such as psychological stress,
occupational risks, and disrupted family life. The study draws on current literature (2019–2025), government
data, and relevant reports. Findings highlight that while financial incentives and global mobility drive initial
interest, long-term retention is challenged by emotional strain and health risks. The paper proposes strategic
interventions to ensure both the welfare of seafarers and the sustainability of maritime labor supply from
the Philippines.
