Sharks are susceptible to exploitation. The pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) species visits the
newly discovered sites at Kimud Shoal, Tabango Leyte where its consistent occurrence has promoted an
expanding dive tourism industry and viewed distinctively as marine conservation area. Thresher shark
dependability to this area provides visual census and these movements established that they have access
to the open waters, diurnal dispersion from and returning under this particular territory of Tabango, Leyte.
The shark regular visit and symbiotic relationship with cleaner fish on the seamount provides opportunity
for local and regional businesses that lack experiential knowledge of their vulnerability. The pelagic
thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus), as recorded in International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN)
as endangered species (Rigby et., al. 2018) and vulnerable to extinction globally, due to severe, continued
declines in their populations around the world because of habitat loss, overfishing, climate change and
pollution also threatened their survival. (IUCN 2021) The finning and dumping of their cadaver after the
removal of the dorsal fin is the main culprit for the number of sharks death annually. Based from nature’s
environmental history observations, a proper protocol, management awareness, protection and
conservation of this vulnerable and rare shark species is actively implemented, continuing support of shark
conservation regulations, anchor the existing and future conservation policy of the , governance, more
research studies, initiate communication, shark information dissemination drive in the area are the
planned intervention.
