To be able to properly follow the common educational dictum, it is said that teachers should begin instruction where the pupils are. As recognized in most schools, there have been a significant number of poor readers, which educators try to help out with. Out of 630 sixth grade learners tested in Phil-IRI, results showed that 179 fell under the frustration level. Reading difficulties, therefore, should be identified in order for teachers to innovate new measures to address this problem. This study was conducted to primarily determine the relationship between study habits and reading interests and the reading performance of the grade six learners in Palompon South District, Leyte Division. The participants of the study were the Grade Six learners of the twenty complete elementary schools in Palompon South District.The descriptive correlation was utilized.The main instrument used was a self-formulated questionnaire, which was formulated based on discussions, suggestions, and short conferences with other teachers. The test of the significant relationship between study habits and reading interest revealed that study habits are significantly related to the respondents’ reading interests. The research shows that study habits and reading interest have no significant relationship to the reading performance of the pupils in Phil-IRI. Some recommendations are also hereby given. It is suggested that a specific diagnosis should concentrate on the individual to isolate deficiencies or gaps that are probable causes of poor performance. Parents should motivate their children in their studies to make them appreciate
the value of good study habits and reading performance, while teachers must have a more comprehensive view of their pupils’ reading abilities. It is also recommended that further studies on study habits and reading interests be conducted to validate the results of this study.
