Seafaring uncovers many facets of self-sacrifice and self-denial. The main intention of the study was to make a comprehensive account of how working conditions at sea impact seafarers’ state of health based on their emotional/mental and physical conditions. Mixed methods design was employed. Quantitatively, the respondents were slightly emotionally stable while their physical state indicated that they infrequently experienced ailments. The overall mean for the current state of health implied that the respondents had only a slightly good current state of health. Qualitatively, with Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenology method, analysis of the participants’ responses led to a cluster theme on separation with four (4) sub-themes on emotional/mental conditions: long periods of separation from family, coping with loneliness, social withdrawal and isolation, fighting homesickness on board and two (2) sub-themes on physical conditions: physical demand/struggles in being a seafarer and health issues related to being a seafarer. All these surfaced which aptly revealed the current state of health of Filipino seafarers on board.
