This study examines the work conditions, health risk factors, and gender-related
challenges faced by shellfish gatherers (manginginhas), with a focus on understanding
the impacts of these factors on the well-being of gatherers and their communities. The
research explores various aspects of the profession, including the demographic profiles
of gatherers, the health risks associated with shellfish collection, and the socio-economic
conditions that influence their livelihood. Shellfish gathering is physically demanding and
often hazardous. Gatherers face various risks, including exposure to harsh
environmental conditions, and dangerous work environments. The study identifies
several common health issues among shellfish gatherers, such as musculoskeletal
disorders, and respiratory problems. The study highlights the gendered nature of
shellfish gathering, with women often being the primary gatherers, particularly in rural
coastal communities. Economically, many shellfish gatherers struggle with low and
inconsistent incomes, which are often insufficient to meet their families' daily needs. The
study reveals that gatherers are highly dependent on the availability of shellfish, which
can fluctuate due to environmental conditions, market prices, and seasonal changes. The
lack of financial stability often leads to reliance on additional income sources or informal
work. Thus, this study underlined the importance of integrating gender-sensitive, health-
focused, and environmentally sustainable approaches in addressing the challenges faced
by shellfish gatherers (manginginhas). It calls for coordinated efforts from governments,
NGOs, and local communities to improve the livelihoods and well-being of these
workers, ensuring that shellfish gathering remains a sustainable and equitable
occupation for future generations.
