This paper explores the significance of gender in relation to maritime clusters. While the
idea of maritime clusters has gained traction as a strategic approach to enhance the
industry's overall efficiency through innovation, discussions regarding the
empowerment of women within this sector have been limited. Women's participation in
the maritime industry remains notably low in many regions, with both horizontal and
vertical segregation still prevalent today. This study highlights a gap in the current
literature regarding the contributions of women professionals in implementing the
concept of maritime clusters. To promote the integration of the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 5 (gender equality) into national maritime
strategies, the paper employs Rapid Integrated Assessment (RIA) as a method to
analyze the roles of women professionals in maritime clusters. The four stages of RIA
provide a framework for countries to create a roadmap for achieving the SDGs. As we
approach the Fifth Industrial Revolution (also known as Industry 5.0 or 5IR), and the rise
of new business models in the maritime industry, prioritizing gender equality presents
an opportunity to move beyond traditional practices and foster sustainable
development in this sector.
