This study examined the relationship between reading comprehension strategies and the reading
comprehension performance of 120 college freshmen at Palompon Institute of Technology – Tabango
Campus. Using a descriptive correlational design, students were surveyed with a validated reading
strategies questionnaire and assessed through a standardized reading comprehension test. Results
indicated that students frequently employed strategies such as summarizing, predicting, and highlighting,
which were significantly associated with higher comprehension performance. Findings suggest that
deliberate and strategic reading enhances understanding of academic texts, supporting better overall
learning outcomes. The study recommends integrating structured instruction on effective reading
strategies into the freshman curriculum to strengthen academic performance and promote lifelong
learning skills.
